The Exumas
are an archipelago of 365 cays and islands (one for each day of the year). Situated
one hundred and twenty (120) miles south-east of New Providence (Nassau) it
is about forty miles in length, and about seven and a half miles at its widest
point.
Settled after the American Revolutionary War, many Loyalists and their slaves
chose Exuma as their home. Setting up cotton plantations which flourished for
a brief time but soon decline due to the chenille bug.
In 1957, the House of Assembly declared a large portion of the necklace-like
chain of the Exuma Cays, a Bahamian National Park; it is a haven for yachtsmen.
The bright white sand of the deserted beaches is a striking contrast to the
aquamarine and jade hues of the water. The splendor of the pristine beaches,
the crystal-blue green waters and the lush tropical greenery attract people
from around the globe.
